⓵  Jennifer Johnson Cano sings Offred in Anne Bogart’s new Handmaid’s Tale production at Boston Lyric Opera, May 5–12. David Angus paces the cast, which also includes Caroline Worra (Aunt Lydia), Maria Zifchak (Serena Joy) and Matthew DiBattista (The Doctor). After Boston, the American mezzo heads to New York, for Psyché and Shéhérazade at Alice Tully Hall (May 19). 

⓶  Deanna Breiwick sings Rosasharn in Ricky Ian Gordon’s Grapes of Wrath, directed by James Robinson, which has its Michigan Opera Theatre premiere on May 11. Tobias Greenhalgh (Tom Joad), Geoffrey Agpalo (Jim Casey) and Katharine Goeldner (Ma Joad) also star, under the baton of Michael Christie. In June, the American soprano arrives at Des Moines Metro opera, for Cunegonde in Michael Shell’s new Candide staging.

⓷  Charles Castronovo is Admète to Dorothea Röschmann’s Alceste in Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s new production of the Gluck opera at Bayerische Staatsoper (May 26–Jul. 18). Following Alceste, the tenor heads to Los Angeles for Alfredo in LA Opera’s Traviata, directed by Marta Domingo.

⓸  Alan Gilbert conducts Graham Vick’s new production of Die Tote Stadt at La Scala (May 28–Jun. 17); Klaus Florian Vogt (Paul), Asmik Grigorian (Marietta) and Markus Werba (Frank/Fritz) star. Following Milan, Gilbert heads to Munich, pacing Renée Fleming and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in a program of Tchaikovsky, Korngold and others.

⓹ British conductor Robin Ticciati leads Richard Jones’s new Damnation de Faust production at the Glyndebourne Festival, May 18 to July 10. The staging, which stars Allan Clayton in the title role, Christopher Purves (Méphistophélès) and Julie Boulianne (Marguerite), is the first Damnation to be presented at the English festival. In between performances of the Berlioz, Ticciati also takes the podium for Glyndebourne’s Rusalka, by director Melly Still.

⓺  Amanda Majeski sings the title role in Krzysztof Warlikowski’s Iphigénie en Tauride production at the Staatsoper Stuttgart, April 28–May 30. Jarrett Ott (Oreste), Elmar Gilbertsson (Pylade) and Alfred Walker (Thoas) also star, paced by Stefano Montanari. In July, the American soprano heads to Santa Fe for Fiordiligi in R. B. Schlather’s new Così production.

⓻ After selling out Wilton’s Music Hall in London last September, Benjamin Britten’s Paul Bunyan, directed by Jamie Manton, receives its first English National Opera revival at the Alexandra Palace Theatre, May 9 to 13. ENO Harewood Artists Elgan Llyˆr Thomas (Johnny Inkslinger) and Rowan Pierce (Tiny) star, while Olivier Award-winning actor Simon Russell Beale provides the offstage recorded voice of the title character.


100 Years  


To celebrate Gottfried von Einem’s centennial, the Wiener Staatsoper puts on  Dantons Tod , the work that launched the composer to international fame following its 1947 Salzburg premiere. Josef Ernst Köpplinger directs the cast, which includes Tomasz Konieczny (George Danton), Benjamin Bruns (Camille Desmoulins) and Michael Laurenz (Hérault de Séchelles); Michael Boder conducts.

⓼  Issachah Savage  is Siegmund in Opéra National de Bordeaux’s new production of Die Walküre, by director Julia Burbach. Evgeny Nikitin (Wotan), Ingela Brimberg (Brünnhilde), Sarah Cambridge (Sieglinde) and Štefan Kocán also star, led by Paul Daniel (May 17–23). The American tenor returns stateside at the end of the month for a concert Lied von der Erde with the Omaha Symphony Orchestra (May 31 and Jun. 1). 

⓽  Nicole Car is Micaëla in Opera Bastille’s Carmen, which stars Anita Rachvelishvili in the title role and Roberto Alagna as Don José (Apr. 11–May 23). The Australian soprano remains in Paris through July, heading to the Palais Garnier for Donna Elvira in Ivo van Hove’s new Don Giovanni production, which features Étienne Dupuis in the title role. spacer
