A dozen singers to watch in the 2019–20 season


Women on the Verge Golda Schultz 919 
South African soprano Golda Schultz sings Clara in Porgy and Bess and Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier at the Met. She starts the new year as Micaëla in Munich and Liù in Vienna. 


Diana Damrau begins 2020 as Juliette at La Scala and  I Masnadieri’s Amalia in Munich. She returns to the Met in March,  for a recital with Antonio  Pappano, then crowns the Met’s Maria Stuarda revival in April.

Leah Crocetto is Desdemona at Washington National Opera, Liù at Palm Beach Opera, Elisabetta di Valois at Dallas Opera and Bellini’s Norma at Pittburgh Opera. In January, she sings Verdi’s Requiem for Opera Philadelphia. 


Norwegian soprano Lise Davidsen, a 2015 Operalia winner, makes her much-anticipated Met debut in November, as Lisa in Tchaikovsky’s Queen of Spades . She also sings Leonore in Fidelio in Montreal and at Covent Garden.

Emily Fons is Angelina in Atlanta Opera’s Cenerentola in November. In February, the American mezzo sings Hansel for Canadian Opera Company. She reverts to Rossini in April for Rosina in San Diego Opera Barbieres. 



Ying Fang’s schedule features Mozart this season, with Zerlina at Lyric Opera of Chicago, Susanna at LA Opera and Pamina at HGO and the Met. The Chinese soprano also sings Sophie in Werther at the Met in March.

Daniela Mack will be Rosina in Minnesota Opera’s Barbiere, Juno in Opera Philadelphia’s Semele, Romeo in Bellini’s Capuleti e i Montecchi at Opera Omaha and Varvara in Kát’a Kabanová at the Met. 



American soprano Marjorie Owens sings the title role in Turandot and Senta in Der Fliegende Holländer for Canadian Opera Company next season. In summer 2020, she takes on Strauss’s Elektra in Stuttgart.

In April, Japanese soprano Eri Nakamura is Cio-Cio-San in Ted Huffman’s staging of Madama Butterfly at Philadelphia’s Academy of Music. 



Mezzo-soprano Sarah Mesko sings the title role in Carmen for Tulsa Opera in autumn. Next summer, the Arkansas native revisits the Gypsy in a new staging at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis.

Czech mezzo Magdalena Kožená returns to the Metropolitan Opera in December, as Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier, paced by Simon Rattle. In April, Kožená sings Mozart’s Idamante at Berlin State Opera. 



Vanessa Vasquez is Donna Anna  in Washington National Opera’s Don Giovanni in February. In May, the Colombian–American soprano travels to Seattle, for a run as Mimì in La Bohème.
